AI settings for research
Choose available tools, response detail, thinking depth, and processing limits for a research conversation.
Open Copilot Agent, select the intended conversation or New Research, then choose Chat settings to open AI Settings. On a narrow screen, choose More actions > Settings.
Changing settings requires Contributor access to the workspace and chat, plus Platform and Research Copilot licenses. Settings do not grant access to files, projects, or management systems. Check the conversation and workspace before making a change.
Behavior
Use tools controls whether Copilot can use tools in this conversation. Choose Auto to let the AI decide when tools help, On to keep tools available, or Off for direct answers. When Use tools is Off, the individual tool-group controls are disabled.
Each available group also offers Auto, On, and Off:
| Group | What it makes available |
|---|---|
| Internet | Web search, browsing, and brainstorming. |
| Workspace | Your available profile, project files, artifacts, and organizational documents. Platform access is required. |
| Workspace & IMS assistant | The Workspace tools plus the integrated management system (IMS) assistant when Platform and IMS licenses are available. Both follow the same Workspace setting. |
| Utilities | Date and time tools and diagram exports. |
Read the license message beside an unavailable control. Turning Workspace on does not bypass resource permissions, and an uploaded file still needs to be ready for the AI to read it.

Tone & Thinking
Response detail offers Brief, Balanced, and Detailed. Choose how much explanation you want in the answer. Thinking depth offers Fastest, Faster, Balanced, and Thorough to control how carefully the AI reasons before answering.
These choices affect AI responses. The chat header's compact or comfortable display control changes message spacing on your device.
Advanced
Expand Advanced to see Parallel tools and Max turns. Parallel tools allows independent tools to run at the same time when safe; it can use more resources. Max turns limits processing iterations within one request, from 1 to 300, with a default of 300. It does not set the number of messages you can keep in the chat.

Apply, Save, and Reset
- Review the settings and the summary at the bottom of the dialog.
- For a new conversation, choose Apply to use the draft settings for the new chat. For an existing conversation, choose Save to save its settings.
- Wait for AI settings applied or AI settings saved. The dialog closes after success.
Reset puts the available defaults into the unsaved draft. Review them, then choose Apply or Save to accept them. Reset does not immediately change the saved conversation. Apply and Save remain disabled until the draft has a change.
Choose Close to leave the dialog. If you have unsaved changes, review the discard confirmation: discard them to close, or keep editing. You cannot close while a save is in progress. If saving fails, the dialog stays open with your draft; check your access and retry.
The composer's Internet, Workspace, Utilities, Response detail, and Thinking depth controls apply changes directly without opening this draft dialog. Wait for an existing chat's setting update to finish before sending the next message. For a new chat, they update the settings used when you start it.
For project selection, attachment availability, and permissions, see Chat access and project scope.
